The Australian families
About 50% of the Van Dorts in Australia are
of Sri Lankan origin, as the prejudice in Sri Lanka by the native Singhalese
against the English speaking Burghers from 1948 onwards meant that most
of them migrated to Australia, England and the US. It seems that at least
one of the van Dort people in Australia came from Bergen op Zoom in the
fifties. His name has not been recollected yet. He was either a carpenter
or a contractor. There is also a family van Dort in Melbourne who is believed
to be from Amsterdam 6). There are about
50 families with the name van Dort on the white pages of Australia. |
